Advanced connectivity technologies in Scotland: who works in it, who is hiring, and where new entrants get in

Summary

  1. The pool is real and it is in the central belt. 1,789 people currently work in advanced connectivity roles in Scotland. Edinburgh (roughly 490 including its wider area) and Glasgow (roughly 445) hold just over half; Aberdeen is a clear third on the back of energy-sector networks and satellite links.
  2. It is a senior workforce with a thin entry layer. Only 7% of the people are early-career and 35% are senior. The commercial family is the extreme case: 183 people, 144 of them senior, 2 early-career.
  3. Employers are hiring, but almost entirely for experience. Of 78 live vacancies, 6 are explicitly graduate, junior, technician or intern roles. Leonardo's Edinburgh site alone accounts for 21 of the 78, and it is recruiting RF engineers at every level at once.
  4. Two clusters dominate the hardware end. Defence and aerospace electronics in Edinburgh (Leonardo, Honeywell, Thales) and the small-satellite cluster in Glasgow (Spire, AAC Clyde Space, Alba Orbital, AST SpaceMobile). Both hire predominantly at senior and principal level and neither shows a named graduate scheme for RF or satellite roles in the public record.
  5. Only one role family has a formal Scottish entry route. Fibre and network build has the Telecommunications Modern Apprenticeship and Openreach's £157m Project Gigabit contract behind it. Every other family relies on degree conversion, informal first jobs or ad hoc placements.
  6. Demand is about to rise where the entry infrastructure is weakest. The Ofcom mmWave auction (October 2025), Project Gigabit, Type 26 communications contracts and the Fraunhofer photonics award (£8m, December 2025) all add demand. The Scotland 5G Centre, which hosted the wireless conversion hubs, describes itself as in transition; the room should confirm what replaces it.
  7. The fastest wins are adjacent moves, not new degrees. IT networking staff into telecoms core and private networks; software engineers into embedded and firmware; physics graduates into photonics; ex-forces communications trades into field, test and ground-station roles. None of these is run as a named programme in Scotland today.
  8. Pay is not the barrier at entry. First roles sit at £28,000 to £35,500 for technician and commercial entry, £35,000 to £45,000 for graduate engineering, and the market is paying an 80% to 120% contract premium for senior RF engineers, which is the cost of not having a pipeline.

So what for SPRINT: the constraint is not the talent pool or the employer base. It is that entry routes are informal in nine of ten role families, and no one owns them. The most useful output of the workshop is a named owner for each missing route.

1. The sector in Scotland

Advanced connectivity in Scotland is not one industry. It is a set of overlapping capabilities that sit inside defence electronics, space, telecoms operators and their contractors, photonics, and a long tail of SMEs. The workforce falls into five clusters.

Edinburgh: defence electronics, RF and embedded

Leonardo at Edinburgh Technopole is the largest single employer in the data (about 90 people identified, 35 of them in RF and microwave) and the largest advertiser. Honeywell Aerospace, Thales, Sofant Technologies (mmWave phased arrays), Zenovo, CodaOctopus, Shure and STMicroelectronics add depth in RF, embedded and electro-optics.

Glasgow: satellites, photonics and wireless research

Spire Global, AAC Clyde Space, Alba Orbital and Exotopic form the satellite and ground-segment cluster. Coherent, the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics, Vector Photonics and Chromacity anchor optical. Strathclyde's StrathSDR lab, the University of Glasgow 5G testbed, Neutral Wireless, AWTG and Picocom carry the Open RAN and private 5G work.

Operators and network build, Scotland-wide

Openreach (48 people identified), Vodafone, Virgin Media, BT, Sky, Neos Networks, Commsworld, GoFibre and the fibre contractors (AmcoGiffen, United Infrastructure, Diona, BUUK). Project Gigabit Scotland (£157m to Openreach, May 2025, plus Borders, East Lothian and North East lots) is driving field demand.

Aberdeen and the rest

Aberdeen holds about 165 people, mostly network and wireless roles serving offshore energy operations. Dundee, Livingston (electronics manufacturing, including Plexus), Kirkcaldy and Falkirk each hold small populations. CENSIS in Glasgow connects IoT capability to SMEs across the Highlands and Islands.

By family, RF and microwave carries 28 of the 78 live roles, network and core 12, optical 12. Wireless systems, satellite, embedded, test and commercial each have between three and six. The pattern is consistent: employers advertise for people who can already do the job, and rely on a graduate trickle for the rest.

4. Where new entrants get in, and from where

Graduates

Strathclyde, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh produce several hundred electronics and electrical engineering graduates a year; that pool feeds RF, wireless, embedded and test. Strathclyde's EEE programmes map explicitly onto 5G, software-defined radio and Open RAN. Physics and photonics graduates from the same universities plus St Andrews feed optical roles through Fraunhofer CAP. No standalone RF or microwave degree exists in Scotland, so RF entrants specialise on the job over six to eighteen months.

Apprenticeships and technician routes

The Telecommunications Modern Apprenticeship is the only formal Skills Development Scotland route into any of the ten families. Technician entry exists in practice at Leonardo (manufacturing and test technicians) and Plexus, but is not written up as a progression pathway. No apprenticeship standard covers RF, FPGA, satellite ground segment or spacecraft operations in Scotland.

People counts come from an analysis of 8,701 public professional career records located in Scotland, of which 1,789 are people currently in advanced connectivity roles. Vacancy counts come from live job adverts across Scotland observed on 9 September 2026, de-duplicated across boards. Market facts are drawn from published announcements, procurement records, the statutory register and published salary sources, each dated.

Two cautions. Public career records over-represent large employers, whose staff keep fuller public profiles than SME staff, so a small firm's absence from the employer figures is not evidence that it lacks these people. And career stage is read from job titles, which understates early-career numbers at employers that do not use graduate or junior titles.
